Alfred DEAN
Rank: Corporal
Number: 6216
Unit: 1/7th Battalion GORDON HIGHLANDERS
Date of Death: 2 November 1916
Age: 25
Cemetery: Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France

Almost nothing is known of Alfred’s life, except that he was the younger son of Sanderson dean of 160 Granville Street, Stockport. He enlisted into the army in 1914.

The late autumn of 1916 was relatively quiet time on the Western Front with the Battle of the Somme finally fizzling out. At some unknown point, Alfred was wounded, probably be shellfire. He will have received treatment just behind the front line, from the Battalion’s own medical officer before being evacuated to a field hospital perhaps twenty miles away. Once his condition had been stabilised, he would have been further evacuated to the more comprehensive medical facilities at one of the base hospitals around Boulogne, where he died.
