Cemetery: St Paulís Churchyard, Portwood, Stockport

Almost nothing is known about this man, whose name is inscribed on the Stockport War Memorial. His medal entitlement records (on-line at the National Archives) indicate he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. To have been eligible for these, he must have served abroad on active serve. He was not awarded the 1914 Star or the 1914/15 Star, indicating he must have gone abroad after 31 December 1915.

He is not listed in the CD-ROM "Soldiers Died in the Great War" which is taken from Regimental records published in the early 1920s. This, together with his burial at home, suggests that he had probably been discharged from the army, due to wounds or illness, some considerable time before he died. However, his inclusion  on the War Graves Commission Debt of Honour register confirms that his death was attributed directly to his war service.
