Robert Cunningham DIXON
Rank: Private
Number: 266082
Unit: 1/6th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 31 July 1917
Age: 26
Cemetery: Menin Gate Memorial, Ieper, Belgium

Robert's family home was at 19 Lock Side, Marple. The 1901 Census records a Robert Dixon living in Marple and then aged 10, who is probably this soldier. The boy had been born in Accrington, Lancashire.

Before enlisting at Stockport, Robert had worked as a plumber for Mr Thompson, Prince's Street, Stockport. His original service number, 3130, suggests he probably enlisted in the late autumn of 1914 and probably went overseas in the middle of 1915. He was killed on the first day of the Battle of Passchendaele described here.

Further information about Robert, including a photograph, can be found in the book "Remembered" by P Clarke, A Cook and J Bintliff
