Edward had been born in Stockport and is thought to have lived all his life in the area until he enlisted into the army. His parents, Edward and Mary Jane,  lived at 14 Port Street.

His service number indicates that he joined up in September 1914, soon after war was declared on 4 August. He will have gone overseas the following summer and been involved in all the Battalion's major actions of the war. On 21 March, the Germans launched a massive assault on British positions. The fighting went on for several days. Click here for an account of the day when Edward was killed. As with many soldiers killed in those few days, he has no known grave.
