Alfred was still undertaking his basic army training when he died at Southwold Cottage Hospital of septo-meningitis following pneumonia. He had been born in Whitefield, the only son of Percy and Betsy. The family later came to live in the Stockport area, where Alfred enlisted into the army. In the early 1920s, his parents were living at 19 Oakfield Road, Davenport.
