Isaac ELLISON
Rank: Private
Number: 100340
Unit: MACHINE GUN CORPS (Cavalry)
Date of Death: 31 December 1917
Age: 21
Cemetery: Hadra War Memorial Cemetery, Alexandria, Egypt

William Ellison, a boilermaker, married Sarah Bleackley at All Saints Church, Heaton Norris in the first quarter of 1895. By the time of the 1901 Census, they had three children - William (then 6), Isaac (4) and Harry (5 months). They lived in the Lancashire Hill area of Stockport and, in the 1920s, the family was at 115 Greg Street, Reddish.

When Isaac was conscripted into the army, sometime after early 1917, he was allocated to the 4th Reserve Cavalry Regiment for training purposes and was given the service number 17771. He was then assigned to one of the cavalry squadrons of the Machine Gun Corps, but it is not known which one

Although it has not been possible to discover any of the circumstances, the original records of the War Graves Commission note that Isaac drowned. It is, perhaps, reasonable to speculate that his death in this way, on New Year's Eve, might have resulted from some over-exuberant celebrations.
