Lionel Carrington EMERY
Rank: Acting Corporal
Number: 4235
Unit: 2/6th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 9 May 1916
Age: 29
Cemetery: Stockport Borough Cemetery

William's inscription on the Bredbury War Memorial suggests he served with the 15th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. It is not known if he did originally serve withthis unit, but he was certainly serving with the 9th Battalion, when he was killed.

He had been born in Woodley, the son of James and Esther and, at the time of the 1901 Census, was working as a finisher in a local felt hat-making factory. He enlisted, at Hyde, in September 1914 and was killed at the Battle of the Aisne described here.

William was not originally buried at Chambrecy as the Cemetery was not created until after the Armistice in 1918. He was probably buried close to where he died and his body re-interred when these very small burial grounds were closed after the war as the land was returned to civilian use.
