Unit: 1/4th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 15 September 1917

Cemetery: Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt

Edward Fay was born in Stockport. Between October and December 1894, he married Annie Clarke and they lived at 6 Dukinfield Place, Hillgate, Stockport.

For reasons that are unknown, Edward did not enlist under his real name but served as Edward Smith. The 1/4th Territorial Battalion saw action at Gallipoli in 1915, but did not arrive until the major actions were over. It then moved the Egypt and was engaged in the operations in Palestine from early 1917. Edward is recorded as having "died" in hospital in Alexandria. This word was usually used by the military to describe deaths from natural causes (as opposed to "died of wounds").
