John had been a regular soldier, serving for 7 years in India and had been recalled to the colours, as a reservist, when war was declared on 4 August 1914. After leaving the army, he had been working at Stockport Corporation's Gas Works at Portwood.

Details of his family are not known, although it is recorded that, after the war, Mary, his mother, was married to a Mr Little and was living at 43 Great Egerton Street, Stockport. The family are believed to have been Roman Catholics with John being baptised at St Joseph's Church, Petersgate.
