Joseph was born in Leigh, Lancashire, the son of Matthew and Bridget Ellen. The family was still living there at the time of the 1901 Census where Matthew , then aged 43, was working as a coal hewer. Bridget was 38. At some later point, the family moved to live at 29 Bolton Street, Reddish. They worshipped at St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church

Joseph worked locally for J Halden & Co, Reddish until he enlisted in the army in April 1916. He had three younger brothers also serving in the army. John and Thomas are listed in the 1910 Census and the third brother was, presumably, born after March 1901. Click here for details of the fighting in which Joseph was killed.
