John had been born in Stacksteads, Lancashire By 1916, his parents, Joseph & Emma, were living in Marple. He was married to Dorothy who, in the early 1920s, was living at 201 Wellington Road North, Heaton Norris. It's unknown if this was their home.

John was fatally wounded during a period of front line duty described here. He was evacuated from the trench and taken to 33rd Casualty Clearing Station some miles away at Bethune where attempts would have been made to save him.
