The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records that Samuel was the son of Annie Finlay, 25 Avenue Street, Portwood, Stockport. The 1901 Census suggests that his father may have been the Joseph Finley, 34, listed as working as a lamplighter at a gas works.

Samuel volunteered for the army and enlisted at Stockport. His service number confirms this was in September 1914. he was killed during an enemy attack described here.
