Unit: 1/6th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT

All that is known about James is that he had been born in Edgeley, Stockport and that the 1901 Census recorded him, aged 13, working as a "doffer thread worker". His original service number is 243, which confirms he was a longstanding pre-war member of the Territorials. He would have been mobilised when war was declared in August 1914. James was killed in an attack on the first day of the Battle of Passchendaele. He has no known grave.
