Nothing is known about John Firth, except that he had been born in Levenshulme, Manchester. To have been fighting with the Cheshires so early in the war means he must have been a regular soldier or an ex-regular recalled as Reservist when war broke out. He is recorded as having enlisted at Stockport, suggesting that being a Reservist is the more probable.

An account of the fighting in which he was killed is here.
