Nothing is known of John Flanagan's early life, except that he had been born in Castelbar, County Mayo, Ireland and he is recorded as having enlisted in the army in Stockport, suggesting he had come to live in the town at some point.

To have been fighting so early in the war means he must have been a regular soldier or, more likely, an ex-regular recalled to the colours as a reservist when war was declared. An account of the fighting the day he was killed is here.
