John FLYNN
Rank: Lance Corporal
Number: 20820
Unit: 1st Battalion King’s Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment
Date of Death: 28 May 1918
Age: 21
Cemetery: Pernes British Cemetery, Pernes-en-Artois, Pas de Calais, France

The first mention that has been found of John is in the 1901 Census when he was 3. His parents were Thomas and Margaret and they had four children - Norah (then 7), Joseph (5), John and Francis (10 months). They lived in a 4-room home at 27 Great Egerton Street, Stockport, later moving to 19 Woodman Street.

When John left school he served an apprenticeship as a plumber working for Stantons of Lord Street. John volunteered for the army at the end of 1915 or early 1916 and, after training, went overseas on 3 June 1916. He was attached to "A" Company of the 1st Battalion, King's Own.

John will have seen major action in the latter stages of the Battle of the Somme in the late summer and autumn of 1916; the Battle of Arras in the following April and the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) in the summer/autumn of 1917.

The Battalion's War Diary for May 1918 reveals that the troops were having a relatively quiet time. Tours of duty in the front line were interspersed with periods in Brigade reserve.  On the 26th, they started another tour in the front line near Pacuat (Pacault?). On the 28th, the Germans made a raid on the section of the front line held by "D" Company which was repulsed. However, five men were killed and one wounded. John was the man who had been wounded. He would have received attention from the Battalion's own Medical Officer, just behind the front line. This would have been little more than first aid and he would then have been moved further back to the Main Dressing Station. This was not a full hospital facility but would his condition would have been stabilised so that he could be moved to one of the Casualty Clearing Stations based at Pernes. Here army surgeons would have done all they could to save his life but without success.
