Date of Death:

It has not been possible to identify this man who is commemorated on the Stockport War Memorial as serving with a Lancashire Regiment. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists 18 men with this initial, but none were serving with a Lancashire Regiment at time of death and 17 have no apparent connection to the Stockport area.

The name of Sydney Fox is commemorated on the Heaton Moor Memorial. He died whilst serving with the Royal Fusiliers and, according to his on-line medal entitlement records at the National Archives, he never served abroad with another Regiment. It is possible that friends or colleagues arranged for his name to be included on the Stockport Memorial and made an error about his unit.

It is, also, possible that Fox had been discharged from the army, perhaps due to ill health, and died some considerable time after. This would account for his lack of commemoration by the Commission. Similarly, he may be a man who was conscripted late in the War and never served aboard.
