William GARNER
Rank: Private
Number: 33437
Unit: 13th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 10 October 1916
Age: 22
Cemetery: Courcelette British Cemetery, Somme, France

Between July and September 1871, William Garner, senior, married Maria Norbury at St Mary's Church , Cheadle. They probably had other children before William, junior, was born in 1893.

His service number indicates he enlisted into the army in early 1916, so would not have been at the front for very long before he was killed. On 6 October 1916, the Battalion started a tour of duty in the front line, relieving the 2nd South Lancashires at Hessian Trench. This former German trench, near the village of Thiepval, had been captured in late September. On 10 October, they extended their sector, taking over part of the line from the 11th Lancashire Fusiliers. The enemy artillery had been very active throughout the tour and there had been daily casualties. This day, the shelling from both sides was very heavy with the consequent increase in deaths. William was one of 11 men recorded as having been killed.
