George had been born in the parish of St Mary's C of E Church, Stockport and was the son of Mr W Gaskell, 51 New Zealand Road. He was the brother of Robert Gaskell who had been killed in 1915.

He worked for a hat manufacturer in Denton until he enlisted in the army in September 1914. He was killed in the attack described here. After the action, George was posted as "missing" and it was not until June 1917 that the War Office made an official presumption that he must have been killed. His body was never found and identified.
