Robert was the youngest son of William Gaskell, 51 New Zealand Road, Stockport His brother, George, also served with the Cheshires and was killed in 1916. Robert worked as piecer at Pear Mill and, in his spare time, was a racing pigeon enthusiast and a member of the Cale Green Homing Society.

He enlisted shortly after war was declared and went overseas on active service in March 1915. Robert was killed at the Battle of Loos in October.
