Unit: UNKNOWN OVERSEAS FORCE

The name of E Gibson is inscribed on the Stockport War Memorial as someone who served with an "overseas" force. Attempts to identify him have failed. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records the names of several men who served with Australian, Canadian, New Zealand or South African forces. None have any obvious connection with the Stockport area.

During the course of research, one man, Alexander Edmund Gibson was confirmed as being buried at Manchester Southern Cemetery, having died on 25 July 1916. His full service file has now been examined, on-line at the Australian National Archives, and whilst this indicates he was in a military hospital when he died (after having been shot), there is absolutely nothing to indicate and family connection with Stockport.
