Date of Death: 12 January 1919
Age: 48
Cemetery: Dunkirk Town Cemetery, Dunkerque, Nord, France

Nothing is known of George’s early life. In 1915, he married Susan Clarke in a civil ceremony registered at Stockport.

The men of the Royal Marine Labour Corps spent the War unloading ships at Calais and Dunkirk and were, almost exclusively; men aged over 40 who had some previous experience in this sort of work. Although well behind the lines, their service was not entirely risk free as, particularly later in the War, they were subjected to very regular bombing raids by the Germans.

George’s death, several weeks after the Armistice was signed , will have been due to accident or illness.
