Frederick AXON
Rank: Private
Number: 2487
Unit: "B" Company, 1/6th Battalion CHESHIRE REGIMENT
Date of Death: 8 February 1916
Age: 24
Cemetery: Corbie Communal Cemetery, Somme, France

Frederick was born in Stockport and lived with his mother at Derby Street, Edgeley and later at 23 Heawood Street. He worked as a blocker at Christy’s hatworks.

His service number suggests that he was probably a pre-war member of the Territorials and would have been mobilised when war was declared in August 1914. The Battalion’s early months of war service is described here.

Fredrick died from pneumonia. He was at a Casualty Clearing Station when he died and id not even reach a proper hospital. It would probably have been to no avail – modern antibiotics had not yet been invented.
